Test preparation

Get it right the first time

A few minutes of preparation saves you a repeat sample and a second trip.

Do this

  • Fasting sugar or lipids: nothing to eat for 10 to 12 hours; water is fine
  • Pregnancy and urine tests: bring the first urine of the morning if you can
  • Pelvic ultrasound: drink 4 to 5 glasses of water an hour before and don't empty your bladder
  • Take your usual medicines unless your doctor said otherwise
  • Bring your request form, NHIS card or company referral

Avoid this

  • Alcohol in the 24 hours before liver or lipid tests
  • Heavy lifting or a gym session the evening before a kidney test
  • Sweet drinks, gum or sweets while fasting
  • Biotin or 'hair and nails' supplements for 2 to 3 days before thyroid or hormone tests
  • A fasting test straight after a night shift if you ate during the shift
Lab questions

Lab FAQs

Do I need a doctor's request form?

Not for blood, urine or stool tests on the price list. X-rays and ultrasounds need a request from a doctor, so bring yours or see our walk-in doctor first.

How do I get my results?

As a PDF by WhatsApp or email, or printed at the desk. Abnormal results are flagged, and our doctor calls you if anything needs urgent attention.

Do you take blood from children?

Yes, babies included. Children's samples are taken in a separate room and a parent stays with the child throughout.

Can you collect samples at home or at our workplace?

Home collection within Tema costs GH₵ 80 per visit. Workplace collection is included in Site Partner accounts and can be arranged for other companies on request.
